This year, Berlin had one of its longest winters on record.
At the earliest sign of spring, Berlin’s parks were flooded with locals making the most of the much awaited change in weather.
Clear skies, no snow and sunshine led to a group of us organising a get together and BBQ at Tempelhof airfield.
This airfield was made famous after Soviet Authorities closed all road and water access to the encircled city in June 1948. The subsequent result was the Allied Forces staging “Operation Vittles” where they brought the cities entire supply line into the city via air. This lasted until the end of the blockade in September 1949.
Now, we weren’t flipping our steaks in between the take-offs and landings of aircraft. Tempelhof saw its last scheduled flight leave in November 2008 and has since been converted into a public park.
The taxiways are now home to cyclists, wind boarders and skateboarders who weave their way through the pedestrians who choose to just travel by traditional means on foot.
