Looking at Berlin from a geographical perspective, (“haha”, lolzzzz, no seriously though…) you might find yourself wondering why a place that is so flat has a single hill both significantly and randomly rising out from its surrounding landscape.
The hill known locally in Berlin as Teufelsberg, German for “Devil’s Mountain”, has arguably one of the most fascinating histories in a city that is by no means lacking in content for that category.
Teufelsberg came up on my radar when I saw a video last year of an acquaintance’s band playing a brilliant cover of Bon Iver’s “Calgary” inside the abandoned NSA complex that now sits on the hilltop. The photographer in me also became rather envious of the photo’s my Google search of the area brought up, hence, when a trip to Berlin became possible this year, Teufelsberg was top of the list so I could have some to call my own.
