Travel Photo Of The Week: Holocaust Memorial Berlin

Berlin is a city absolutely bursting with remnants from some of the most significant moments in the world’s history over the last hundred years.

Probably one of the most significant factors making Berlin such a remarkable city is the way in which it has managed to restore and maintain its historic relics, merging them into modern architecture or display features for the general public to view, use and appreciate. Along with the historic reminders of its past, Berlin also has some modern structures, that have been thoughtfully created to act as impacting reminders of some of the country’s less brighter moments in its past.

There probably isn’t a more impacting modern monument in Berlin than that of the Holocaust memorial, officially known as “The Memorial to the Murdered Jews of Europe”.

Designed by architect Eisenman, the memorial was completed in 2004. It covers a 19,000 square metre area which consists of 2,711 concrete slab blocks set at different heights and laid out in a grid system. The intention was to give visitors an overwhelmed sensation of confusion and being lost.

I took this photo after walking through the monument grounds for and taking a few moments to reflect on what the site represents. The afternoon sun allowed a great opportunity to capture the contrast given by this square orientated monument.
